THE LOCAL SHOW FAQ
HOW DO I SUBMIT MY BAND MUSIC FOR THE LOCAL SHOW?
Send! Originals preferably, but I love hearing covers too.
Send your CDs here:
The Local Show
KDGE
14001 N Dallas Pkwy 300
Dallas, TX 75240
I dont recommend sending a press kit. I also dont recommend CDs with an unlabeled spine. Why? We dont really have the space to organize that stuff well. I make stacks of everything at my desk, and look at the spines when Im programming the show. If a CD-R is all you have, or a little cardboard slipcase, go ahead and send it, and Ill do my best. Press kits are expensive! Dont spend too much of your band $ on those. Slap them together when requested by a venue or whoever else your submitting to. Youd be heartbroken if you knew how often those things go in the trash at record labels and radio stations. For the local show, put all your info on the CD and send on. Spend the extra time/money on writing, recording, and mixing. :)
Send me an MP3 here: ayoontheedge@yahoo.com
Please dont send MP3s or large attachments to my regular email, ayo@kdge.com . I get tons of stuff at that address, and CC only allows us each so much space on the server, so a lot of times that inbox will shut down if its over capacity, and sometimes I have to urgently delete attachments without ever opening them to be able to use that email address again.
Send me links/correspondence here:
ayo@kdge.com OR right here at this page.
I promise I read 'em all, and I try really hard to write back as many people as possible....
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Anything that at least loosely or remotely falls under the ROCK genre. It can be mushy and sappy, all the way up to metal. a lot of country-fied stuff also woks well, and I love getting comedy music, too.
HOW CAN WE GET OUR BAND ON THE COCKFIGHT?
The cockfight is "on ice" right now. Not airing. Were considering the concept of its return, or maybe something similar. Regardless, I dont really program the 9 o clock cockfight. Vince Richards is the program director, and a very vey busy man for CC, as he is also our operations manager and PD of KEGL.
Yes, sometimes we played unsigned bands on there. I encourage you to send something (use the address up above), but I recommend only one song, and only what you consider to be your strongest, most exceptional recording. The PDs get TONS of music submissions, from all over the world, largely from signed heavyweights with big label push behind them....so the competition to get on the cockfight/on KDGE period is fierce ...and, because of the volume of music theyre sifting thru, getting their attention can be a painstaking and difficult process. They are doing their best to listen to everything....its an overwhelming amount of submissions.
HOW CAN WE GET OUR BAND INTO REGULAR ROTATION ON KDGE?
See above. Exact same answer applies.
HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT TO PLAY ON THE LOCAL SHOW?
Simple. I pick what I consider to be the most well-written rock songs. Quality of recording doesnt hurt the deciding factor either, but if its a great song but not a great recording, sometimes Ill spin it anyway. Depends on the song.
WHAT QUALIFIES YOU TO BE THE ONE TO CHOOSE WHAT GOES ON THE LOCAL SHOW?
I may not know how to do much right in the world (Im especially challenged when it comes to relationships, algebra, politics, and major sports), but I like to think I have a damn good set of ears for rock songs. Im a musician myself, and also play in a local band here (no, i dont have any plans to be playing my OWN band on the local show....doesnt seem fair...) called scary cherry and the bang bangs. Ive been doing rock radio stuff since I was a squirt....over 20 years experience now. I dont claim to be perfect, nor do I think my sole opinion is the be-all, end-all.. but I promise you, Im very familiar with what our listening audience likes/wants to hear, and know the difference between something half-assed or contrived, and something that moves me emotionally and that was obviously written with a lot of brutal honesty. Music is my passion, and my lifes work. Its not an incovenience to me at all.
HOW LONG IS IT GONNA TAKE YOU TO LISTEN TO OUR STUFF?
Sometimes weeks, sometimes months. Im tryin! you can only listen to so much music before you need to take a break and reset your brain. Feel free to follow up with me after you submit. Youre not buggin me! Besides, sometimes stuff gets lost, misfiled, or wont play right.
WE WROTE YOU AND YOU DIDNT ANSWER. WHATS THE DEAL?
Im sorry! Im tryin, man. I have a lot going on and Im doing the best I can.
If I dont answer it usually means one of the following:
-i dont know the answer
-i havent listened to your stuff yet
-i didnt get your message for some reason
WHAT CAN WE DO TO BUTTER YOU UP/PERSUADE YOU TO PLAY OUR STUFF?
Nothing, short of writing a great song. Haha. Believe me, weve been offered it ALL!
Weed, money, food, shots, beers, gifts, sex, trips..... They all sound nice, and are tempting, but Ive been blessed with more cool "stuff" in my life than anyone could hope for, and would never selfishly place my own greed before the sound of my radio show. I owe it to the musicians, and to the radio station. Plus, a brilliantly written song will make me higher, happier, and more fulfilled than any of the above mentioned.
Spend the time/money you would have spent chasing me around with a bribe to re-work that song, and youre good to go.
HOW CAN WE GET YOU TO WRITE US UP IN YOUR COLUMN IN "QUICK"?
For those of you who dont know, I write a Small column in the Thursday issue of this paper, put out by the Dallas Morning News: www.quickdfw.com . Its called "five to see live", and it about local regional acts that are playing in DFW that weekend. I also co-host a weekly podcast on the site thats about the weekends up ad coming entertainment.
Best thing to do is keep me posted on your upcoming gigs...and submit some music for the local show.
HOW CAN WE GET YOU AND RENEE TO MENTION US IN YOUR WEEKEND-Q PODCAST?
Get the gig info to me, or to Renee, and well see what we can do. You can reach her at the quick website mentioned above.
DONT YOU HAVE ANY HELP LISTENING TO ALL THIS MUSIC?
No, not directly, but I have friends out there with their ear to the tracks...and theyre ears I trust. If you bring it to their attention and they like it, chances are I probably will too. Heres an incomplete list of those people...see if you can track them down, haha! (Theyll love me for that one)
